Birthday Musings on our Comfort Zone

Today is my birthday. Birthdays can be a good time to take stock and be reflective. I’ve been thinking a lot lately, as I often do, about solutions to wicked problems like climate change. How do we get from where we are to where we need to be, collectively? I once read a book by Jane Goodall where she said we all need to become saints. And, in a way, we do.

I can be an overachiever. I’ve always been introspective. I’ve never needed to stick my face in the mud in order to find out what I didn’t want.  I can learn easily from other people’s mistakes.

My mind is relatively quiet and that allows me to focus and to think things through clearly. I don’t have that thing–maybe it’s self-consciousness, that makes other people quit. But, until recently in my evolution, I’d look at other people and then look at myself and say, “good enough.” But, is being good enough really good enough for the world?

Well, hell no! The world doesn’t need any more good enough. What the world needs is for us all to dig deep, find our heart’s calling, and to grab onto it with both hands.

This can be really scary. All kinds of stuff comes up when we break through long established patterns and beliefs–like the belief in our own powerlessness, or the belief that things can’t change.

It can be terrifying moving outside our comfort zones.

But, the only true liberation in life is to look into that abyss, understand that we can’t control, while at the same time we can co-create the outcome we choose.

And since we’ve already shown up to the dance, let’s get out there and co-create the best of our dreams and aspirations for everyone!
