The South Florida South Florida Audubon Society is pleased to announce that it has received a $13,300 grant from the AD Henderson Foundation. This grant, coupled with Toyota TogetherGreen funding, will allow the organization to continue its environmental education in the Broward County Public Schools throughout the 2011-2012 school year.

The Cool Planet program helps upper elementary students foster effective problem-solving skills by recognizing the interdependencies in their environment (locally and globally) and the effects of their actions on their environment.

Cool Planet is divided into 4 different one-hour modules delivered weekly over a period of 5 weeks. Students work with the concepts of natural resources, energy sources and their carbon footprint. Over the course of the program, students will complete a personal energy audit and energy journal. The curriculum also touches on water resources and endangered species.

“Cool Planet is an interactive and hands-on program,” says SFAS program manager, Maria Rotunda, “It tasks the students to recognize the ways they impact their environment and empowers them to be a positive force of change.”

If you are a 4th or 5th grade teacher or principal at a Broward County Title One School who would like to have the SFAS’s Cool Planet program offered at your location, please contact program manager, Maria Rotunda at 954-937-4903 or maria@myearthprints.com.
